When did you first visit the Outer Banks and what made you stay? My first visit was in 1958 and I moved here in the fall of 1971. My parents bought a sound-side cottage in Avalon in the early '60s. As soon as school was out, my mom brought my brother and I down and we spent the entire summer crabbing, fishing and, later, surfing. In the summer all of the kids worked at The Holiday Marina at the end of Avalon Drive. Working there introduced me to sailing, and I have sailed my whole life. The Outer Banks was just a good fit for me.
